Light Truck Sales and Honda Division Set New Records
Torrance, Calif. 11/01/2002 -- Total Honda division sales hit a new record high in October while record sales of both Honda and Acura light truck models helped to soften the blow of slowing demand for new vehicles felt throughout the industry last month.
American Honda posted record light truck sales of 35,964 units in October, a 21.9 percent gain over last year, while total vehicle sales fell 5.8 percent to 103,256 units for the month based on a daily selling rate. Total sales of Honda and Acura vehicles for the year are up 2.6 percent over year-ago results to 1,049,023 through the end of October. Total American Honda sales also surpassed last month by 2.0 percent.
Spurred by continuing strong demand for the Odyssey minivan and Pilot SUV, Honda Division light-truck sales rose 21.5 percent to 31,478 vehicles, setting a new October record. Record Honda division sales of 91,152 for the month surpassed year-ago results on a unit basis, but fell 3.1 percent on a daily selling rate.
Compared to a record October last year, total Acura division sales of 12,104 were off 22.1 percent for the month due in part to the limited availability of certain vehicles arising from the West Coast port closings. Sales of the MDX luxury SUV rose 24.8 percent over year-ago results to set a new October sales record of 4,486 units.
