Torrance, CA 06/28/2006 -- Twenty-seven years ago, Honda set the course for others to follow with its decision to build products in North America.* The company's commitment and investment has expanded as demand for Honda and Acura products has grown. Reflecting this long-standing business strategy to build products close to its customers, the new manufacturing facility in Indiana will be Honda's 14th major manufacturing facility in North America.

North American Automobile Production

2005 Actual Production: 1,348,897 units
2006 Production Capacity: 1.4 million units (U.S. 680,000; Canada 330,000)
North American Purchases: $16 billion from more than 600 suppliers
(Fiscal Year 2006)
Total Capital Investment: More than $9 billion (including new Indiana plant)

Quick Facts:

  • Honda began operations at its first North American manufacturing facility in 1979 - the Marysville, Ohio, plant for the assembly of motorcycles.
  • Honda began auto production in North America in 1982 with the opening of its Marysville, Ohio, auto plant and production of the Honda Accord and has produced more than 16 million cars and light trucks in North America since that time.
  • Every major Honda plant in North America has met the ISO 14001 international environmental management standards (except the transmission plant in Georgia, which opened in May 2006).
  • Approximately 80 percent of all Honda and Acura automobiles sold in America are produced in North America.
  • A number of Honda and Acura models are manufactured exclusively in North America, including the Honda Pilot, Element, Odyssey, Ridgeline, Accord Coupe, Civic Coupe and Civic Si and the Acura TL, MDX and RDX.
  • Honda has been manufacturing automobiles in the U.S. longer than any other international auto manufacturer, using domestic and globally-sourced parts.
  • American Honda was the first Japanese automaker to export its U.S.-built cars to overseas markets (1987).
*using both domestic and globally-sourced parts and materials.
