A Blizzard Blows Through Hell; Fukui Confirms V-8

Every now and then strange things happen. A baseball team that averages nearly 100 losses a season for the previous 10 years suddenly wins the ALCS. A ski resort opens in Hell and features more powder than Park City. Bigfoot's body is found in the woods of north Georgia. Honda's CEO confirms a V-8 engine and the confirmation is mentioned as a side note in an Automotive News article regarding his thoughts on the Fed's bailout of American automakers.

While all of those scenarios sound improbable, at least two of them are actually reality. Fans of the Tampa Bay Rays are probably still pinching themselves over this season, but Fukui's alleged confirmation of a V-8 engine coming down the pipe is downright shocking, to say the least. We've heard many rumors of a Honda/Acura V-8 in the past, but to this point have never had any form of confirmation. In announcing the NSX successor Fukui confirmed a V-10 engine several years ago, and these fanned the flames of the V-8 rumors. We have been hearing reports coming from the dealer side that there was in fact a V-8 under development, but given the checkered past of Honda V-8 rumors, these rumors have long been met with a healthy dose of skepticism.

What makes this statement from Mr. Fukui particularly interesting is that just last week Automotive News stories were indicating that any plans that Honda may have had for developing V-8s had been (once again) shelved. Perhaps these lower ranking officials were unaware that Mr. Fukui would later contradict their own statements.

Given the current market conditions and the volatility of oil prices, this will undoubtedly generate some spirited feedback, but Mr. Fukui himself boils it all down with this statement: "I don't think that the Acura RL 3.7-liter is sufficient. We can't compete with other premium brands."

UPDATE: Apparently this breakthrough has generated sufficient traffic to melt down Automotive News' web servers.
