Conclusion

While not a revolutionary step forward, the new S2000 represents incremental improvements in essentially every possible category. It's true that I do miss the reach of the 2.0L motor, but nevertheless I must concede that the new 2.2L motor is just plain better overall. It would be nice if we could try the same motor with slightly taller gearing, but it's a safe bet that Honda's engineers likely struck the best compromise.

For most current and prospective S2000 drivers, the new suspension represents a step forward as well. Now that the rear suspension's geometry has been revised to extinguish any discernable bump steer, there's really nothing to complain about at all. Some may have quibbles with the relationship between front and rear grip, but that sort of stuff is relatively simple to address with different tire sizes, wheel alignment, and sway bars, etc.

For those fearing the worst, rest assured that none of the S2000's core qualities have been compromised in order to improve the drivability of the car. It's every bit as fun to drive as the '00-'03 models, and for many, it's less painful as well.

It's amazing that the '04 car is markedly better than the '00-'03 models, yet the asking price of $32,800 is scarcely beyond the sticker price of my 2000 model. I'm still happy with my 4-year old S2000 and I don't plan to upgrade any time soon, but for those who must have the best and the latest, the '04 S2000 is the real deal.

Pros
  • Quicker, Stronger, Faster
  • Higher limits and it's more forgiving at the limit without sacrificing pleasure
  • Very tossable
  • Beefed up clutch/diff seem stout
  • More stylish wheels, headlights, taillights, interior, front bumper
  • Now, 2 cupholders
Cons
  • 1000 revs short
  • Could possibly benefit from a taller final drive ratio
  • The old gauge cluster is better
  • Rear bumper design is a bit overdone
  • There's not one in my garage
