I still believe Honda could have left the Type-R at a compression ratio of 11.0:1 instead of lowering it down to 10.6:1. Since, I blew up my engine and AEM had a set of Arias 10.0:1 compression, stock bore pistons on the shelf and I had no plans to stay in Texas for a long time, I now have them in my car. I lost my JG head during my little mishap (luckily I was carrying a spare cylinder head with me) and GTP of Houston P&P'd my new head and milled it 20 thousands. So now I'm running a conservative compression ratio of 10.5:1. This is before I came to the conclusion of what happened to my engine in which I'm about to explain.

What I now believe happened with my engine, was a couple of things. The first thing is the aftermarket chip I'm now running. It suppose to be good up to 8500 rpm. But, after 8500 rpm, there is no rev limiter or fuel map. When I missed my shift and took my car way beyond 8500 rpm I had no fuel. Detonation! And with the high revs, the high compression and slightly thinner cylinder walls might explain why the number 3 cylinder cracked and 6 out of 8 of the valve springs on the exhaust side came out of the retaining clips. Another theory behind the valve springs coming out is that my adjustable cam sprockets slipped. I'm going to stay on top of them a little better in the future.

Lesson learned: DON'T PUT THE CAR INTO 2nd GEAR DOING 80 or 90 mph!

The real lesson: Watch aftermarket chips. If they say no rev limiter ask the sales person if that means they have infinite memory for an infinite fuel map. If they have, they've solved all the worlds memory problems ;P So a good back up would be an ignition system like Crane or MSD which have adjustable rev limiters which would be much more kinder to your engine :(

Alright, sorry about the math lesson.

While you're having your local shop prepping and starting to put all these parts together, find out if they can balance the crank. Balancing the crank will allow the engine to rev freely. This is a must for high revving engines.
