Indianapolis Wrap Up
What can be said about Indianapolis except that it gives us an opportunity to look forward to the updates for France? Rubens Barrichello made an early exit from the race after getting tangled up in a first lap, first corner incident which has become a common occurrence at Indianapolis. Button was also involved in the fracas and lost several positions and suffered a bit of damage to the front of his car but was able to continue.

During the race both Super Aguris were able to get by Button however Sato spun and beached his car in the gravel pit. Result: DNF for Sato. While Button did not have a particularly good race in terms of his finishing order there was a bit of an edge and aggressiveness in his driving that was a tick above normal for Jenson. Perhaps the frustration of this season will make Button bold and daring when the RA107 gets up to speed.

Button actually could have finished a bit better had it not been for a malfunction with his fueling rig during his single pit stop that cost him an extra 7 seconds in the pits but more importantly, put too much fuel on board which slowed up his pace a bit. Had he not had this problem and the loss of positions and damage to his car from the turn 1 melee Button could have at least been looking at a top 10.

Yet another tough weekend for Honda F1, but from the ashes of disappointment there are a few embers of hope wafting in the breeze for the French GP.

Jerez test
Last week Honda F1 and Super Aguri opted to test new parts for both cars at Jerez instead of testing with several of the other teams who ran at Silverstone in preparation for the British GP.

The testing program included new front suspension bits as well as new aero parts. It is difficult to ascertain how much improvement the updates were worth relative to the competition but the RA107 was able to post a fast lap that was approximately .8 seconds faster than the Super Aguri SA07 of Anthony Davidson. If the RA107 is now truly .5 to 1 second faster than the Super Aguri the factory Honda should have points scoring pace well in hand.

More New Employees
The fresh faces at Honda keep coming in as John Owen of BMW Sauber, Francois Martinet of Williams and Peter Coysh of McLaren join Honda F1. All three men are senior aerodynamicists at their current teams with many years of experience in Formula 1. Owen will be the new head of aerodynamics at Honda, which leaves the question of what will happen to the current head of aerodynamics?

These personnel additions in the aero department will hopefully help Honda continue to improve in aerodynamic performance so that perhaps the RA108 won't start the season behind the 8 ball the way the RA107 did.

Super GT

Our Temple of VTEC Asia Lead Editor, WongKN was on site at the Sepang Circuit in Malaysia for the 4th round of the Super GT championship. It was not exactly smooth sailing for the two factory Honda NSX's of Team ARTA and Team Kunimitsu as both cars encountered problems during the race.

Moto GP

Donington Wrap Up
Donington was the first time this season that 2 Hondas qualified on the front row, with Dani Pedrosa qualifying 3rd and Nicky Hayden qualifying 4th, his best performance this year by far. Not only that, but Nicky and Dani led 2 of the three free practices, one in the wet, one in the dry. For awhile it was looking like the Repsol Honda team was going to be able to pull off their first win of the season.

Unfortunately it wasn't to be. Nicky and Dani both ran in the front pack that broke away in the beginning of the wet race and Dani was able to pass polesitter Colin Edwards for the lead for a bit. However, Nicky ended up lowsiding (he was able to remount but finished 4 laps down). Dani apparently made the wrong tire choice as his Michelins gave up the fight in the second half of the race and he slipped backwards to 8th.

Both Colin Edwards and Valentino Rossi of Yamaha suffered similar tire problems towards the end of the race as the track dried. The Bridgestones on the other hand came into their own in the drying conditions and the 'Stones were able to take the win in the hands of Casey Stoner.

While the results do not show it, it was actually a good outing for Repsol Honda. Both of the factory bikes fought at the front for a portion of the race and both of them were fast all weekend. Not surprisingly, none of the other Hondas were even in the hunt. It may be quite awhile before the updates from the 2 factory bikes make there way down to the satellite teams.

What happened to Johnny Rea at Donington? What Happened to Kenny???
Following his success at the Suzuka 300km and presumably because Nicky Hayden won't be competing, Honda decided to protect their prospects for the 8 hour and did not let Rea contest the Donington GP on a KR machine. Team KR hopes to have him do a wildcard ride with them at some time later in the season anyway.

Kenny Roberts Jr. decided to sit out the round and the subsequent rounds at Assen (Netherlands) and Saschenring (Germany) in lieu of his brother Kurtis. Kenny will return to the track at the US Grand Prix when Team KR's new chassis will make its debut.

His father and team principal Kenny Roberts Sr. joked:
"Things haven't been working out with him this year because the bike is too slow and he is too old."

Dani Considering Leaving Honda?
After a frustrating race at Donington Dani dropped the surprising possibility of him leaving Repsol Honda for another team. The comment that touched of a somewhat exaggerated flurry of speculation and gossip was made to Spain's AS newspaper:

"You can't close any doors, but at the moment we have to focus on this year. You can't shut your eyes and think that there's only one option available," Pedrosa said.

Pedrosa's contract is up at the end of the season. Pedrosa has been with Honda since he started his Grand Prix career in the 125 GP class in 2001. Before you start calling him an ungrateful SOB or other choice pejoratives, it is not uncommon for hypercompetitive riders to jump ship after a bad season in pursuit of a championship. However, given HRC's track record it would be a bit unwise to bet against them returning to their winning ways soon. Former Repsol Honda rider and world champion Alex Criville had this to say to Autosport.com:

"They are in trouble, but they will not be in trouble for long. It may be difficult for him to go through the problems the Honda has, but they are Honda and they will return. They (always) do..."

The question of loyalty (specifically, did Nicky think he would've been better off with Ducati) was also put to Nicky Hayden by a RoadRacer X magazine reader and the Kentucky Kid had this to say:

Still, even if we've got some work to do on my bike, I'm happy where I'm at. When you get to the prom and see some girl working it on the dance floor, you don't just blow your girl off and try to change up: you dance with the girl you brought. I might be a fair-weather fan on some things - Kentucky basketball, for example - but when it comes to my bike and my team, we're definitely in it together. You win races as a team and you lose races as a team.

This Weekend's Dutch TT at Assen
We're officially at the halfway point of the 2007 season and the race weekend has gotten started a day early. The Dutch TT at the Assen Circuit in the Netherlands will be run on Saturday instead of Sunday so make sure you catch the race on CBS at 2 pm EST. If it's your first time watching, try to overlook the awful commentating until you can watch a race on Speed Channel with the world broadcast team.

At any rate, the Repsol Honda boys are looking good thus far. The forecast is variable at this point and for now rain is expected on Saturday which would make it anyone's game. If we get a dry race we may finally see both Repsol Hondas finish near the front.

Toni Elias in a Femur-Breaking Crash
Toni Elias suffered a devastating spiral fracture of the femur after having a fairly fast low side crash into a gravel trap that apparently pitched him into a tumble. He underwent surgery today but he most likely will be out for 3 months if not the rest of the season.

Not one to waste time, team principal Fausto Gresini got on the phone with James Toseland's manager about filling in for Toni. The Moto GP and WSBK schedules only conflict for one round for the rest of the season so it is entirely possible James could do both. However, since James is fighting hard for the WSBK championship it is highly likely Honda will veto him doing double duty.

Who will be the sub? Neil Hodgson is currently a Bridgestone test rider and could get the nod. Andrew Pitt has run Moto GP on occassion and is currently unemployed. After those two, perhaps James Ellison could get a call, or maybe even Johnny Rea or Ryuichi Kiyonari. The possibilities abound.

World Superbike

Misano Wrap Up
The caption of this photo at Superbikeplanet.com is "The reflection of too many bikes in front of King James on the grid". Indeed it was. Toseland never really threatened to take the win on the weekend but didn't suffer too much points damage as Max Biaggi took out Noriyuki Haga, who was second in the championship in race 1.

Race 2 didn't go much better (actually it went worse) for James as he was only able to muster a 6th place finish. It seems that the lack of testing at the revised Misano circuit hurt the Ten Kate star as his chief rivals apparently enjoyed a bit of an advantage from testing at the circuit earlier this year. James still leads the championship with 260 points followed by Xerox Ducati's Troy Bayliss with 239, and Yamaha Italia's Noriyuki Haga with 234.

Toseland Moto GP Rumors
Following his strong 2007 WSBK championship challenge Toseland has been a hot commodity in the Moto GP paddock. D'Antin Ducati, Gresini Honda, and Tech3 Yamaha have all expressed public interest in King James. There may even be some factory teams throwing their name in the hat but it's not clear yet, especially with a lot of silly season shuffling going on with the top riders in the series.

Honda Europe's sporting manager Carlo Fiorani wishes to keep Toseland in WSBK for 2008 in order to keep Honda at the front. He said to MCN:

"Our opinion as Honda Motor Europe is to keep him in World Superbikes." He continued with, "If he will push, and we understand this, and there is a seat for him, we will work it out to find a good place for him in MotoGP. In August maybe we can understand the situation better. "

However, that's how Honda lost Chris Vermeulen (2005 Ten Kate WSBK runner up) to the Suzuki Moto GP and it'd be foolish to lose James to another factory in exactly the same manner. James has expressed the desire to go to Moto GP and if Honda doesn't give him the seat there are plenty of others that will. The only question is are any of the seats available to him worth taking?

If Honda Europe is so worried about their competitiveness in WSBK for 2008 they have several options for riders to fly the banner next year. World Supersport phenom and championship leader Kenan Sofuoglu is a likely candidate, as are Ryuichi Kiyonari and Johnny Rea from BSB. 2006 race winner Andrew Pitt is also available and who knows, maybe someone from the AMASBK championship could fit the bill.

With that said it's not exactly a given that Toseland will go to Moto GP in 2008. King James has made it abundantly clear that he doesn't want to go to Moto GP unless he has a ride that he can win with. In the following video link he speaks a bit about that topic:

Ten Kate to Field a Satellite Team
The Ten Kate team will expand and supply a satellite team in World Superbike next season. This second team will allow them to give opportunities to new talent and ostensibly will help them develop their bikes. However this development pretty much guarantees that Ten Kate will not start a satellite Honda Moto GP effort for 2008. Which is just as well since HRC seems to be stretched pretty thin at the moment in Moto GP.

British Superbikes

Mondello Park recap
Mondello Park was the home race for HM Plant Honda's Johnny Rea who is from Ireland. Johnny Rea scored pole position in race 1 but slipped back to 4th place during the race. Stobart Honda (privateer) narrowly lost out on the win, coming in second. Kiyonari ended in a somewhat distant 5th. Bad tire choice was to blame for the two HM Plant Hondas slipping backward in the second half of race 1.

In race 2 Johnny Rea battled with Stobart Honda's Shakey Byrne for much of the race before pulling the pin and checking out for his first victory in the British Superbike championship. After winning the Suzuka 300 km event Johnny seems to be on a roll. He is now third in the championship with 187 points. His teammate defending champion Ryuichi Kiyonari leads with 212 points, and second place is Airwaves Ducati's Gregorio Lavilla with 211 points.

Rumored Return of the Honda Factory Team to WSBK from BSB
A little known fact is that the factory Castrol Honda team that Colin Edwards won World Superbike titles with in 2000 and 2002 did not disappear, they simply moved to British Superbike and became the HM Plant Honda team. At the time the powers that be at Honda were miffed that the WSBK leadership switched the series to a spec tire without a formal bid process thereby kicking out Michelin (Honda's long time technical partner).

Perhaps now Honda is finally getting over that affront to their dignity and will return to do battle once again, especially considering that Ducati's factory effort will probably be stronger next year and KTM, BMW, and Aprilia are all expected to join the party in the next 2 seasons.

AMA Superbike

Miller Motorsports Park Wrap Up
Miller Motorsports Park in Tooele Utah was the site of Honda's last win in the AMASBK one year ago, with Jake Zemke at the helm. Since then every single race has been won by either Ben Spies or Mat Mladin of Yoshimura Suzuki.

Unfortunately 2007 would not be a repeat of last year as Ben Spies took both wins on the weekend. Jake Zemke did take a strong 2nd place in race 2 and may have been able to challenge Spies for the win had he not lost a chunk of time trying to deal with an issue with his bike during the race. Miguel Duhamel fought tooth and nail with Mat Mladin and finally sniped him on the final lap to take the final spot on the podium.

All in all it was not a bad weekend for American Honda but still, no wins. They are creeping ever closer to the Yoshimura Suzukis but the Suzukis are doing some creeping of their own so it remains to be seen whether Honda will be able to bridge that gap.

From the Horse's Mouth About...Traction Control
In speaking to Superbikeplanet.com Miguel Duhamel had a few interesting words to share about traction control, specifically that which his CBR1000RR superbike is equipped with:

"My opinion on it is that we're pretty far from 'traction control'. People think of traction control as like in your car on ice or whatever. We're so far from it. They have traction control," said Duhamel, pointing to a television screen showing a MotoGP race. "That works. We're not there yet."

"Out on the track, you see wheelies and a lot of slides. Computers are pretty quick. They are supposed to catch that stuff," Miguel continued.

The American Honda Superbike team is apparently still experimenting with HRC-supplied traction control and a Magneti Marelli system. Magneti Marelli makes the electronics for the Ducati Moto GP team, as well as Ferrari F1, Ducati WSBK, Suzuki Moto GP, and Yamaha Moto GP.

Neil Hodgson to Ride a CBR1000RR at Laguna Seca?
Motorcycle News (UK) has reported that Neil Hodgson will be riding a CBR1000RR in AMA Superbike at the Laguna Seca round next month (which will feature Moto GP as the main event). It is not clear at this point how this deal came about and what team he will be riding with but details will probably show up soon. On the other hand perhaps Hodgson will be riding Toni Elias' bike at the USGP.

Soichiro's Heroes

Johnny Rea - British Superbike
Johnny Rea is making the most of his first season as a factory rider on the HM Plant Honda team in the British Superbike championship. After his win with teammate Ryuichi Kiyonari at the Suzuka 300km race he scored his debut victory in convincing fashion in race 2 of his home race at Mondello Park. Now that he knows he can win it would not at all be surprising to see him string a few more together.

Andrea Dovizioso - Moto GP 250cc
It was a typically soggy day in England for the 250 cc GP race and it saw crashes a plenty with several of the front running riders going down, including championship leader Jorge Lorenzo. Dovi however kept his cool and deliberately stalked Alex DeAngelis whom had lead the entire race.

With Dovizioso breathing down his neck DeAngelis made a mistake and crashed out of the lead giving Andrea his first victory since the Turkish Grand Prix.

He has now closed to championship gap to 11 points and could very well overhaul the heavily-favored championship leader Jorge Lorenzo whom has made a few costly mistakes in the last few races.

Dovizioso has made no secret of his Moto GP ambitions for next season and should make a welcome addition to the Honda Moto GP family.
