Our son will be working as an intern in a manufacturing company for 3-6 months.

18 years of age.

Needs car.

We prefer AWD and stability control. AWD rules out Honda, sadly.

Any ideas?

Subaru seems best.

My wife and son are currently in Pittsburgh area with his grandma and where he'll be doing internship.

Wife and son have researched briefly. Found these AWD's: Nissan Rogue, Impreza, Forester, Hyundai Santa Fe, Pontiac Torrent, Saturn Vue. Pontiac Vibe (?).

Any comments? Advice?

Is it possible to do a deal in America, subject to no collisions or damage, to buy back at reduced price?

How do performance of CR-V's (part-time 4WD)compare with Subaru (AWD) in snow and ice?

Malcolm

The CR-V is an amazing winter vehicle, and I have no trouble advising someone to get one. However, the new Subaru Impreza checks in at $18k starting, so it might be a better deal for your son.

I generally agree w/DCR here...a new Suby is best value w/AWD.

HOWEVER...I live in Maine and all years except for this one (!!) I have dealt w/many, many snowy days both in the country and city. Best car in the snow I ever had was my first...a 1986 Accord 2dr Hatch rolling on THIRTEENS!!!!! With Bridgestone Blizzaks. I remember fondly being an 18 yr old college freshman and blowing by 4WD Explorers without issues - driving 2 hours home on a snow-covered I95 ;o)

My point? Unless you live somewhere so remote that they don't plow the roads - a FWD vehicle w/proper snow tires (not all-season) works quite well.

My sister in law went from a FWD Camry to an AWD Subaru this year (SPECIFICALLY for her 45 min rural Maine Winter commute)...FIRST WEEK of ownership she goes off the road! ;o) Minimal damage - but off the road FIRST STORM. The ONLY advantage the Suby gave her is i SUSPECT it allowed her to more easily drive out of that field and back on the road.

Sometimes I think people are over-confident in their AWD/4WD and forget that whether your vehicle has 2 wheels or 4 driving the veh. - they all slip and slide on Ice/snow/slush JUST THE SAME! People still need to drive w/caution and decent tires.

Keeping in mind this is for an 18 yr old and SHORT TERM - why not get a reliable, efficient car (2006 Civic/Corrolla @ 35MPG?) for under $15K for the LONG TERM and buy some nice Blizzaks or the like for $600ish?

If price is no object...I'd like a new CR-V for your son (and my wife)!
