Anyone use parking lights anymore?    (Score: 1, Normal) 07-11-2018 01:13

Being of a certain age, Driver's Ed drilled into me the use of parking lights. Anytime I'm parked inside my car, say with the kids while the wife is in the store, etc.

My wife is dumbfounded.

There's also that freshly washed photography moment with the parking lights on after a long day's detail.

Anybody else?

Just like manual transmission, I read that article and thought "this is probably a north America thing again.. "

I didn't Kno it was called a parking light we just call them "the small lights". And we never teach that in driving school but I use it exactly as the article describe. Also useful for judging distance from walls, other cars (in dark), etc.

The use of parking lights when parked along a street at night predates the requirement for reflective surfaces to be built into the lamp lenses on the front and rear of our cars. The rules for the lighting on our cars changed a lot during the 1960s with backup lamps becoming required in 1965, hazard flashers in 1966, and side markers in 1968. The use of parking lights is yet another obsolete law in the US. Most of the cars made before 1965 or so had parking lights which would turn off when the headlamps were turned on leaving just the headlamps on the front of a car illuminated.

I do think our cars should have cornering lamps at the front like the older Cadillacs had or headlamp elements which turn with the front wheels like some cars today. The fog lights on the Fit do a pretty good job when driving in parking lots and neighborhoods without proper street lights at night.

We have had CHMSLs for the past 30 years (wow, has it really been 30 years?), and now we have DRLs.

I think the next exterior safety lighting feature to add is DRL-style lighting for the rear. So, basically, whenever the car is running, the rear taillights go into the on/driving light position (as they do now when your auto lights turn on at dusk). Also, the fast-flashing brake lights during a panic stop could be good.

Now with the Pilot, MDX, and I imagine most others too, we have "heading to the parking lot lights".
