Anyone still on this platform and affected by the J02 valve spring recall for some 2013 models?

Just sent mine in today, nervous af right now because 17 cars in the US have experienced engine failure (spun rod bearings, among other issues) since the recall work was completed on those cars.

Not familiar with flat 4 motors, but what relationship would working on replacing valve springs have with spun rod bearings??

Hello - yes, probably.

I believe Subaru has recently issued an updated TSB telling techs not to block the oil galleys with sealant gunk, in order that they don't need to replace so many trashed engines.

One of 'our' guys recently seems to have suffered a dropped valve, probably due to a broken valvespring.

Our recalls are only just beginning, right now.

Ouch! How come a sealant gunk can lead to such catastrophic failure? Also... Sealant? Wow, I really don't know anything about flat fours.

Blocking oil passageways in an engine is never a good thing.

Mine would have likely been in that bunch; I received it new this time of the year in 2013.

I'm not surprised the FRS failure rate is higher. Toyota techs likely have little experience with boxer engines. The article hints at that.

Didn't these motors have issues with the cam phaser mechanism? I never had any issues, but I remember an early recall.

Very early cars did have a sticky cam variator or two/four.

Ours has never displayed the symptoms of trying to idle with advanced timing.

We did have a recall for a dodgy EPS loom, but I dunno if that was RHD-only.

Keeping all my fingers and toes crossed, I'm getting my car back in the next few days.

I'm a little bit luckier in the sense that my car is going back to Subaru, who have supposedly been changing the valvesprings on some of the other affected cars as well. Downside is only 12 BRZs here are affected, so I may well be the first few to get this done on an FA20.

Assuming the EPS loom recall covered every car here, there are only 25 cars in this city officially, plus a few grey imports, most likely.

In the meantime, I'm dreaming about importing a Civic Hatch but depreciation alone would cost me a whole used BRZ...
