There has been a lot of speculation concerning the future of Honda's Swindon factory, particularly with the complications of Brexit. The BBC is reporting today that while there has been no formal company statement as of yet, BBC sources have learned that Honda will be closing the Swindon factory in 2022, impacting roughly 3500 employees. It is said that Swindon will continue to operate with no changes to production or staff until 2021, however.
Swindon is where 100% of Civic Hatchback (including Type R) production takes place, so many are wondering what this news means for the future of the Type R. We learned just last week that the next generation Civic Type R was recently given the green light from the highest level, so as far as we know it's still safe.
We queried a representative of American Honda about this development, and they do not have any comments to offer at this time.
