LOS ANGELES - It is a sorrowful lament. "Most of our customers buy new Accords without even shopping another car," sighs Charlie Baker, Honda's large-project leader for its all-new 2003 Accord. "We have people walking into our showroom who've owned three or four generations of Accords and wouldn't dream of buying anything else."

Though Mr. Baker makes this sound like a bad thing, he is likely to get millions of renditions of the world's tiniest violin weeping ever so softly for a complaint that any number of automotive marketing managers would die to have.

But the affable and direct Mr. Baker (who, at about 6-foot-4, is also a largish project leader and towered over his counterparts during his two-year stint in Japan) does have a point. Caretaking such a monumental success is as much risk as it is reward. Redesigning it is even more dangerous....
