When it came time last year for Honda Motor to overhaul its aging, 20-year-old Marysville, Ohio, auto plant, engineers were faced with a problem: The plant was already turning out 440,000 Accords and Acuras per year, and dealers were begging for more. Worse, the plant was getting ready for the launch of the 2003 Accord, the first all-new Accord in five years and the most important car Honda makes. Shutting down the factory was not an option.
