The Grand-Am Cup road racing series wraps up the first half of its 2006 season on Memorial Day weekend with a 2 ½-hour race on the historic Lime Rock Park circuit in Connecticuit.
Bill Fenton, who owns the pair of Bill Fenton Motorsports Southern Auto Auction/Acura Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles Acura RSX Type S race cars is all smiles when he thinks about it.
“My car dealerships are only 2 ½-hours away in Keene, N.H., so I consider Lime Rock to be my ‘home’ track,” Fenton said.
That thought is echoed by two of his drivers, brothers Matt and Hugh Plumb, who are now seventh in the Street Tuner class points. They finished second at both Daytona and Phoenix this year and feel the time is right for them to go up one step on the winner’s circle podium.
“Both Hugh and I went to our first Skip Barber Racing Schools at Lime Rock, and drove in our first races there,” said Matt. “I guess you could say it is our home track and we definitely both have some ’local knowledge’. The only problem is that it being such a popular track in the Northeast it seems to be everyone else’s home track as well!"
A Grand-Am Cup series record field of 37 cars is entered for Saturday’s 200-mile Street Tuner class race on the 1.54-mile circuit.
“Following the Phoenix race, Grand Am’s tech people made adjustments to the preparation rules,” Fenton said. “We’re one of the teams that gained 50 pounds, so we’ll see how that weight affects lap times and tire wear.
“Acura is currently down three points to Chevrolet for the Manufactuers’ Championship,” he noted. “We’d like to see those positions switch this weekend and build some momentum.”
Fenton, who stepped away from the cockpit for the Phoenix race, returns at Lime Rock, again with Bob Beede as his co-driver.
Practice at Lime Rock will be Friday at 11:30 a.m. and 3:10 p.m., plus Saturday at 9:15 a.m. with qualifying at 11:10 a.m. Saturday’s race starts at 2:45 p.m.
