R&T: All-new S2000 for 2008

Source: November 2006 issue of Road and Track
 Credibility Rating: 6

t.jpg" border="0" align="left" hspace="10" vspace="5" alt="">The November issue of Road & Track arrived in the mail and the cover feature is "2008 AND BEYOND! FUTURE CARS"

On page 27 there's a half page blurb on the 2008 S2000. This blurb says that they've recently received word that the S2000 is "here to stay" and that Honda insiders have hinted to "keep your eyes open two years from now". To me that sounds more like something may happen for the 2009 S2000, but who's counting?

Details are sparse but the blurb's author, Sam Mitani suggests that it will stick to the current formula of low weight/high power and will be priced against Toyota's rumored upcoming Supra (which in the same issue is said to be getting a 350hp version of Toyota's 3.5L V6 and a curb weight of around 3200lbs) and the next generation Nissan 350Z. The expectation is that the S2000 will be more compact than these two and significantly lighter. Mr. Mitani's friends at BestCar are guessing that the S2000 will likely get a "2.4-liter version of Honda's K24 inline-4" (redundant?), but they say there's also the faint possibility of a 3.0L V6. They're guessing that the 2.4L will develop around 250hp at 7000 rpm and 180lb-ft of torque at 4800 rpm. It's clear that these are WAGs because it's a simple excercise to determine that this motor would need to make 187.5lb-ft@7000RPM to develop 250hp. So while we want to believe that there's a followup to the S2000 in the works, the details to this point seem rather sketchy, so until we start getting more solid info we're going to put the credibilty rating at 6 on this one.

As for the image they've attached to the blurb, I'm seeing a bit too much 350Z roadster or something else that's rubbing me wrongish.
