Asimo (Advanced Step Innovative MOtion) is going to go on a NA Educational Tour. Starts Jan 27th. Don't miss it. The demo is cute, but the robot motion is truly revolutionary.
We saw ASIMO in motion last night.
To say that I was astonished was to say the least. The four foot robot was able to walk, climb and descend stairs, dance ( a pretty good hula no less!) and balance on a single leg. It was able to keep its upper body incredible stable, althought I noticed some vibration on the tips of its outstreched arms as it walked. Probably due to its light weight. Needless to say, this mobilityplatformt has some serious thought and work behind it.
The AHM spokesman mentioned that it was "revolutionary" and at first I couldn't understand. But when you think about it, ASIMO represents reliable bipedal motion as opposed to wheeled motion. ASIMO represents a whole new slew of mobility applications that are not attainable with wheels. Imagine "leg"chairs for the handicapped, remote controllable platforms for dangerous work, etc.... Bipedal motion can go into areas where humans live without any redesign for handicapped access -for example.
I figure that Honda's business plan would call for the sale of ASIMO OEM units for fitting into dedicated applications.
Imagine Cleopatra and Julius Caesar being carried along by head less ASIMO chairs.
Don't miss the show if you can get to it. It was tun too and the robot "spoke" in english.
