Virtual Dyno Comparo: 2011 Honda Civic Si vs 2012 Honda Civic Si

We still haven't driven the 2012 Si, but we've been hearing for a while that it would run essentially the same engine that's found underhood of the 2011 TSX, so by good fortune, I'm driving a 2011 TSX 6MT this week and just dyno tested it. Also, 2 weeks ago, I happened to borrow a 2011 Civic Si from Honda, and I dyno tested that as well. Below, you can see a comparison of the two engines on the dyno - a virtual comparison of sorts. While the K20Z3 zings well on past the K24's peak horsepower, it looks like the K24 makes considerably more power on average (area below the curve). By the way, the reason I borrowed the 2011 Civic Si is because Shawn Church told me he had just dynoed a 2011 Civic Si (customer car) and in bone stock form it put down 14 more hp than any other Civic Si he had previously tested. The "bone stock" curve on the '11 Si I tested obliterates the results of my own 2008 Civic Si, so it seems like Honda has possibly made some unannounced enhancements to the K20Z at some point. Now's the time to snap up whatever inventory remains on the '11 Sis, folks!

Note that while the K24Z3 crushes the K20Z3 pretty much everywhere between 3000 and 6000 rpm, in the '11 Civic Si you never dip much below 6000 rpms if you upshift at the rev limiter, so the outright difference in straightline speed may not be as dramatic as the curves would lead you to believe. The K24 will obviously offer much more flexibility, providing superior acceleration for those times when you are unable to get the needed revs to make the K20Z3 shine.

Here's the 2011 Civic Si on the rollers:
