Andretti To Retire As Driver After Indianapolis 500, Wheldon To Take Seat
Andretti Green Racing confirmed Jan. 31 its 2003 IRL IndyCar Series driver and sponsor lineup and announced that it will manage three teams under the AGR umbrella.
Team co-owner/driver Michael Andretti also announced, at the event at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Hall of Fame Museum, that he will retire as a driver after the 87th Indianapolis 500 this May to devote his energies to his role as chief executive officer of AGR.
Known as Team 7-Eleven, sponsorship for Andretti?s No. 7 Dallara/Honda/Firestone will be provided by convenience store giant 7-Eleven and its flagship brand Big Gulp. Also known as Team 7-Eleven, Tony Kanaan?s No. 11 Dallara/Honda/Firestone will be sponsored by several of 7-Eleven?s vendors. Dario Franchitti will drive the No. 27 Dallara/Honda/Firestone sponsored by Alpine, Archipelago and Motorola. Co-primary partners Klein Tools and Jim Beam will sponsor Daniel Wheldon, who will race the majority of the season in the No. 26 Dallara/Honda/Firestone.
Andretti Green Racing (AGR) also partners with Honda on all four of the team?s entries.
Andretti?s retirement announcement comes months after he joined forces with Kim Green and Kevin Savoree to purchase Team Green from Barry Green. The trio, which has been immersed in the formation of AGR, announced that it will field three cars at every IndyCar Series race this season and four cars at the Indianapolis 500.
?We are very pleased to introduce our driver and sponsor lineup and celebrate the launch of Andretti Green Racing with so many of our friends and partners,? said Green, president of Andretti Green Racing. ?We are happy to announce that we will be running Michael Andretti, Tony Kanaan and Dario Franchitti at the first four events this season but will also add a fourth car for Daniel Wheldon at the Indy 500.
?Following Michael?s retirement at the end of May, Wheldon will become our third full-time driver and will contest the remainder of the season with teammates Kanaan and Franchitti.?
