As you have undoubtedly seen, Japan has suffered an 8.9 magnitude earthquake off of the northeast coast. The earthquake triggered a massive tsunami which has resulted in staggering damage and loss of life. Reports are coming in that several automakers have closed factories and other facilities and Honda is included.
The Columbus Dispatch reports that 4 Honda plants were affected by the earthquake, including their R&D operations in Tochigi:
The earthquake did severe damage to Honda operations in Tochagi(sic), Japan, where the company has an assembly plant and research and development center. One employee died when a cafeteria wall caved in, and 30 employees were injured in various parts of the plant, said Ron Lietzke, Honda's spokesman in Ohio.
In addition to the Tochagi(sic) plant, three other Honda plants are temporarily closed. |
According to Automotive News, in addition to the Tochigi R&D Center, Honda has shut down the Sayama and Suzuka plants in the wake of this disaster. Honda currently exports the Fit, CR-V, Accord, Acura RL, and Acura TSX models from Japan to the USA.
Here at the TOV we are praying for the safety and well being of all residents and Honda Associates in the impacted areas.
